Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung enters the robotics era

FULL STORY
An extremely short delivery time and the advantages of automated plate changing were the reasons why the Neue Osnabrücker opted for a Colorman from MAN Roland. The press is scheduled to commence production as early as November 2008.

The industry was amazed as publisher Hermann Elstermann, managing director Axel Gleie, and MAN Roland’s CEO Gerd Finkbeiner broke the news at IfraExpo in Vienna. From late next year the Neue Osnabrücker Zeiting, which belongs among the elite of Germany’s daily newspapers, is to be printed on a Colorman 'made in Augsburg'. One of the main reasons for the decision in favour of MAN Roland was the APL (Automatic Plate Loading) system which reduces plate changing time for the entire press to 2.5 minutes. This is a great advantage because, besides its flagship paper which has a daily circulation of almost 180,000 copies, the Neue Osnabrücker publishing house also prints the Rheiderland Zeitung and freesheets with high circulations. This all adds up to some 1,650 plate changes every day which means that the enormous time savings provided by APL ensure a very fast return on investment.

The Colorman is to be equipped with four nine-cylinder satellite towers for 4/4-colour printing and the buyer has an option on extending the press with one more tower. It will have four reel splicers with automatic webbing-up, and the TECOSYS web guiding and monitoring system. Besides the Pecom system from the printnet family which is standard, electronic equipment includes a PPM PressManager, a printnet production data acquisition system, and a PlanPag page planning module.

Publisher Hermann Elstermann has a clear view of what this package signifies, 'It demonstrates our entry into a fully-automated future. The robotised APL system will also enable us to reduce the number of presses we need from three today to two in the future.'
